What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Exhibition timeline 1980–2015

The timeline above features a selection of the major exhibitions held at the British Museum from 1980 to the present day. This was made from a comprehensive list of all the exhibitions held at the Museum between 1838 and 2012, as published in Joanna Bowring, Chronology of Temporary Exhibitions at the British Museum (British Museum Research Publication 189, 2012).

A carefully selected collection of British Museum exhibition posters from the early 1960s onward are available for purchase as fine art prints on the British Museum online shop. The range includes examples from the departments of Prints and Drawings and Oriental Antiquities, as well as the former Museum of Mankind.
