Pom Poko (1994)
Director: Takahata Isao
120 minutes + Q&A

In Japanese with English subtitles

Isao Takahata's film uses the tanuki, creatures of myth, as his heroes. Beloved folk-tale characters, they are viewed as bringers of fortune with shape-changing abilities. In this film, their forest home is threatened by urban development and, to save it, they must use all their supernatural talents.

Followed by a Q&A with Director of Programming at Japan House, Simon Wright and British Museum curator Matsuba Ryoko.

Ghibliotheque is a podcast that leafs through the library of films from Japanese animation leaders, Studio Ghibli. In each episode, Michael Leader, an avowed Ghibli fanatic, sits down with Jake Cunningham, who has never seen any of the Studio’s work before. Together they look at the history behind Ghibli's films, get a critical perspective from Jake as a first-time viewer and force Michael to rank some of his favourite ever films.
