Zohra are the first ever all-female orchestra in the history of Afghanistan.

Named after a Persian goddess of music Zohra consist of over 30 young Afghan women who, against great adversity, have studied at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Kabul since 2014. In 2017, the group left Afghanistan for the very first time to perform in front of 2,000 world leaders at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, to great acclaim. On Friday 15 March 2019, as part of Women’s History Month, the group will visit London for the first time for a very special performance at the British Museum.

The concert will showcase these young women’s true colours. Cloaked in exquisitely embroidered costumes, their heads wrapped in bright-hued headscarves, the women of the Zohra orchestra are ready to share their culture and their message of hope with the world.

Presented in collaboration with the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in the UK.
