Edvard Munch was plagued by melancholy, anguish and despair for much of his life, eventually leading him to seek psychiatric treatment.

Dr Åsa Jansson, University of Durham, discusses the history of melancholia and explores its artistic manifestations in Munch’s works.

Dr Jansson speculates on what Munch’s artistic expressions of melancholy anguish can tell us about the way we understand low mood today - and whether art or medicine alone can truly capture the black, soul-destroying despair of melancholia.
