Enjoy Japanese music by world-leading player of the Tsugaru shamisen Hibiki Ichikawa, accompanied by percussionist Akinori Fujimoto. The duo will also perform two specially composed pieces inspired by European musical traditions.

Hibiki Ichikawa is the only professional player of the Tsugaru shamisen in the UK. In 2015, Hibiki qualified to perform under the Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa which is granted only to a select number of honorary artists. He is now officially recognised as a world-leading talent of the Tsugaru shamisen.

Since his arrival in the UK, Hibiki has performed widely, including at the Japanese emperor’s birthday event at the Japanese Embassy, the Japan Matsuri in Trafalgar Square and Hyper Japan. Hibiki lectured at the SOAS World Music Summer School, and is rapidly accumulating an enthusiastic cohort of UK students of the shamisen. His recent activities include participation in the Oscar-nominated animated film Kubo and the Two Strings. His second album, Shami-sensational, was released in June 2016.
