'Where words leave off, music begins' wrote poet Heinrich Heine. His poems inspired some of the greatest songs by Schubert, Schumann and many others.

Writer, musicologist and broadcaster Gavin Plumley uses settings of Heine by various composers as a starting point for a discussion of German identity, political upheaval and artistic freedom, illustrated by music performed by singers accompanied by pianist Sholto Kynoch.
