archaeological site/excavation (Scope note)

This term is mainly used for excavations and archaeological work in progress, but also for general views of ancient sites. For images where the emphasis is on the building or structure in an archaeological site, rather than a general view of the site, the Subject is the type of building (e.g. 'temple'). If, however, the building or structure is shown within a general view of the site, both Subject terms are entered. In all cases, the place name, where known, is recorded as Associated Place. N.B. For views of unidentified archaeological artefacts, the term 'antiquities' is used.
