The BMN Painter (Biographical details)

The BMN Painter (painter/draughtsman; Greek; 550BC - 530BC; fl.)

Also known as

BMN Painter; British Museum Nikosthenes

Athenian black-figure vase-painter whose name is unknown. Nevertheless consistent individual characteristics of style suggest the existence of a unique artistic personality. Beazley called him the BMN Painter after a vase in the British Museum signed by Nikosthenes as potter (epoiesen 'made it'). The acronym is intended to serve as a short-hand version of 'British Museum Nikosthenes Painter'. Other vases have been attributed to this painter's hand on the basis of style. Among the many black-figure vase-painters who decorated vessels made by the potter Nikosthenes (q.v.), he was the best.
