British diplomat, ambassador to Ottoman Turkey from 1799-1803. In 1801 he obtained permission to remove metopes, frieze panels, pediment sculptures and related architectural fragments from the Parthenon and other structures on the Acropolis in Athens. The greater part of the collection, known as the 'Elgin Marbles', was purchased by the British Government for the British Museum in 1816.
