Epiktetos (Biographical details)

Epiktetos (painter/draughtsman; Greek; Male; 520BC - 500BC; fl.)

Also known as

Athenian red-figure vase-painter who signed some 40 vases 'Epiktetos egrapsen' (Epiktetos painted it) and very occasionally 'epoiesen' (made it). He decorated vases made by a number of different potters (Hischylos (q.v.), Nikosthenes (q.v.), Pamphaios (q.v.), Pistoxenos (q.v.) and Python (q.v.). He painted a variety of drinking vessels and also plates and occasionally larger vessels. Although he worked mostly in red-figure he also painted the interiors of some cups in black-figure. In both styles his drawing was extraordinarily precise and elegant and he was particularly skilful in filling a circular space with a finely calculated design.
