Son of Mars (q.v.) and Rhea Silvia (q.v.); mythological founder, with his twin brother Remus, of Rome. Abandoned as infants, they were suckled by a wolf, before being found on the banks of the Tiber. Later instigated the Rape of the Sabine Women in order to populate the new city.
