Sophilos (Biographical details)

Sophilos (painter/draughtsman; ceramicist/glass worker/potter; Greek; 580 BC - 570 BC; fl.)

Also known as

Sophilos, an early Athenian black-figure vase-painter, signed four vases as painter ('egrapsen', 'painted it') and one as potter ('epoiesen', 'made it'). He was a follower of the Gorgon Painter (q.v.) and produced some multi-figure representations of single myths accompanied by somewhat degenerate rows of animals. Enthusiastic in his use of labelling, his paintings are cheerful if somewhat naive. Many vases have been attributed to his hand on the basis of style.
