Hero; king of Athens; son of Aegeus (q.v.) and Aithra (q.v.); he killed the Minotaur (q.v.) and, subsequently, abandoned Ariadne (q.v.) on Naxos; on his return he forgot his promise to hoist white sails to signal his success, thus causing his father to throw himself into the sea.
