In 1861 Henry Wenham Martin presented the British Museum a collection of 2219 prints, mostly related to French history and costume (see 1861,1012.1 to 2219, of which 1 to 873 are single-sheet prints, the remainder books of prints). Among them are many lithographs by Gavarni.
Martin's collection of portraits was sold at Sotheby's 23 June 1853 and 21 January 1854. He gave his extra-illustrated copy of Knight's 'Cyclopedia of Biography' to the National Portrait Gallery in 1861.
His address is given in a letter to W H Carpenter, 14 October 1861, concerning the stamp for his collector's mark made by the BM (P&D, Letter Book)


Lugt 1799. The mark is a circle, inscribed 'British Museum' and 'H.W. Martin collection', with a crown in the middle. It was made in the BM to be applied to prints in his gift.
