Painter of portraits and history subjects, caricaturist; b. London 1735; d. Winchester 1811; son of architect George Dance; brother of George Dance (1741-1825) also an architect and portrait draughtsman; pupil of Hayman from c. 1748; in Rome 1754-65; entered business relationship with Batoni from 1762; exhibited SA 1761-67 and FS 1764; founding member of the Royal Academy 1768; exhibited RA 1769-1776, then stopped painting professionally after inheriting a fortune; 1790 he changed his name to Dance-Holland and became a baronet; became an MP 1790 and resigned from RA when he married a wealthy widow; later executed political caricatures with his brother.
