Old Testament figure; son of Ruth (q.v.) and Jesse (q.v.), king of ancient Israel and successor of Saul (q.v.), slayer of Goliath and seducer of Bathsheba; see the 'Book of David'. Amongst his wives were Michol, Abigail (q.v.) and Bathsheba (q.v.), who bore him a son, Solomon (q.v.). Musician, and traditional author of the Psalms.
