Clock, watchmaker and chronometer maker. Apprenticed to Richard Rippon and married his widow. Clockmakers' Company free 1831, succeeded by his step-sons Frederick (q.v.) and Richard, company continued as E Dent & Co (later Ltd) until c.1976. Watchmaker to the Queen, then clockmaker to the King. Received order for Westminster (Big Ben) which was completed by his stepson Frederick.
