Chronometer makers. A company founded by Thomas Mercer (1822-1900). Thomas Mercer trained as a chronometer maker in London with John Fletcher of Lombard Street and in the 1850s set up in business in Clerkenwell. In about 1875 the business moved to St. Albans to a newly built factory which became one of the world's largest makers of marine chronometers. In later years the company also manufactured mechanical clock movements and electro-mechanical items. Following his death the business was continued by the Mercer family.
