St Catherine of Alexandria (saint/martyr; Female; early 4thC)

Venerated as Christian saint and virgin martyr, patron of education and learning; mystically 'married' to Christ. Said to have been executed by the Roman emperor Maxentius (q.v.). Her attribute is a wheel (usually shown as broken), representing the first attempt to kill her when the wheel to which she had been tied was struck by a thunderbolt and destroyed. She was subsequently beheaded.
