William III of Orange and William III of England. Son of William II of Orange (q.v.) and Princess Mary (q.v.), daughter of Charles I of England. Stadtholder of Holland and Zeeland (from 1672) and Utrecht (1674), Captain-General, and Admiral of the United Provinces. In 1677, married future Mary II (q.v.), daughter of James II (q.v.). 1688, landed with troops in England precipitating flight of James to France. 1690, defeated James's army at Battle of the Boyne. 1689-1694, co-ruler of England, Scotland and Ireland with Mary, 1694-1702, sole ruler.
