Originally a coachbuilder by trade, he became a Seneschal in the Noviomagan society and was elected FSA on 29 May 1819. He served in the City of London Light Horse Volunteers. Hiis collection was mainly devoted to gem-engraving, for which he erected a museum at Gothic Hall. He published works relating to the Portland Vase and the subjects shown on it.


His obituary appears in the Gentleman's Magazine, n.s. XLIII (125.1), 1855, pp. 432-4.
