Prussian antiquarian and collector of engraved gems, books, prints and drawings. Lived most of his life in Florence. Author of 'Gemmæ Antiquæ Caelatæ...' (or 'Pierres antiques gravées...'), 1724, which features 70 engravings executed by Bernard Picart (q.v.) and representing carved gems from European collections. The catalogue of his own collection of 3,400 gems in 1760 was written by Winckelmann.
