Biography

King of England from 1016 and of Denmark from shortly afterwards. Also King of Norway from c. 1030. The famous story of how he attempted to turn back the waves and then used his failure to demonstrate to his courtiers the weakness of his power compared with that of God was first recorded in twelfth-century works of Henry of Huntingdon and Gaimar.
