Legendary Christian saint and martyr; officer in Trajan's army. Converted when he was confronted by a white stag with a radiant crucifix between its antlers while out hunting. Him and his family refused to sacrifice to pagan gods; they were left unharmed by the beasts, and died by being roasted alive in a brazen bull. Often confused with St Hubert (q.v.).
