British colonial district officer in Nigeria, botanist, anthropologist , researcher, one of the best known Africanist of the time; educated at Oxford; author of 'In the shadow of the bush', 1912; 'The Tribes of the Niger Delta', 1932 and many other studies about the peoples of Nigeria; donor to the Pitt-Rivers Museum and the BM in 1905, 1914, 1931 and 1950, in 1923 awarded the silver medal of the Royal African Society.
