Emperor in the East 364-378.
Flavius Valens was the younger brother of Valentinian I (q.v.), and was born around 328. Valentinian raised him to the rank of Augustus in 364 and put him in control of the East; Valens spent much time campaigning against the Goths and Persians. He died in a battle near Hadrianopolis in 378.
