Vernon Gallery (Biographical details)

Vernon Gallery (British; 1848 - 1853; ca.)

Also known as

Vernon Gallery; Hall, Samuel Carter

Publishers of a series of engravings of paintings in the Vernon collection, to which the BM subscribed and bought in parts as they were issued (see Carpenter's report dated 11 October 1848). The agent in some of these purchases was Samuel Carter Hall, who sold or gave some of the prints himself. All the prints regardless of the precise vendor or donor listed in the register have been entered as from the Vernon Gallery itself.
See Carpenter's report dated 8 November 1848, in which he states that the series 'consists of 160 pictures, and it is intended to bring out 2 engravings each month; the publication of the work will extend over a period of six years. The engravers' proofs will be £1 1s each, consequently the annual expenditure during the progress will be £25 4s.'
