Herbert Allcroft practiced as a barrister and inherited a fortune from the family glove-making firm of Dent&Allcroft. He and his wife Margaret travelled to Burma in the winter of 1894/5, as part of a round-the-world trip. They bought many Burmese goods in Mandalay and shipped them back to the family seat at Stokesay Court in Shropshire, where they remained until 1994 when the contents were sold at auction.
