Biography

Ceramic maker, worked in Kyoto. Father of Miyagawa (Makuzu) Kozan I (q.v.). After being apprenticed to Aoki Mokubei to learn pottery techniques, Chozo opened a new kiln in Makuzugahara in Higashiyama, Kyoto. Given the artistic name 'Makuzu' by Yasui no monzeki, a retired monk of the Shingon sect, he began making Makuzu ware.
