Born in England; studied archaeology and anthropology in Cambridge; worked for the Iraq Petroleum Company from 1947-1950, when he was based in Bahrain. Later moved to Aarhus in Denmark where he gained a position in the university and co-directed an important series of Danish archaeological expeditions to the Persian Gulf together with the famous Danish prehistorian P.V. Glob. Bibby was particularly successful in popularising archaeology and wrote several popular books, including 'Looking for Dilmun' (1979), 'Testimony of the Spade' (1956) and 'Four Thousand Years Ago' (1961).
