Biography
Sarah Eglington Wallis was born in Colchester in 1791. She married Mr Thomas Edward Bowdich (q.v) in 1813 and subsequently travelled to the Gold Coast in 1816. She returned with her husband to England in 1818. They moved to Paris in 1819 and joined Baron Cuvier's circle of savants. Having acquired a knowledge of botany and taxidermy she accompanied her husband in 1825 to Lisbon, Sierra Leone and the Gambia. She was widowed in 1824 and returned to England the same year. She married Robert Lee in 1826. Between 1821 and 1853 she published 21 books, 22 short stories and 12 articles, many of which she also illustrated.
