Born in Piacenza, he was a professional writer, editor, and translator for the printers Giolito in Venice and Torrentino in Florence. His prolific output included editions of Luigi Pulci and Boiardo, anthologies of lyric poetry and facezie... He was imprisioned by the Inquisition in 1552-3 for translating a work by Calvin. From the late 1550s he was court historian to Cosimo I de Medici.
