Biography

Archer, founder member of the Royal Toxophilite Society in 1781 and secretary of Sir Ashton Lever. Trade card in Heal Collection (Heal,2*.2) advertises "Thomas Waring, Manufacturer of Bows, Arrows, Targets, & every other Article relative to Archery... N.B. Steel Cross Bows." Bill-head in Heal Collection (Heal,2*.3) states "Bought of Thomas Waring Manufacturer of Bows, Arrows, and every other Article relative to Archery. Leicester House, London." Bill-head in Banks Collection (D,2*.2) states "Bought of Thomas Waring Manufacturer of Bows, Arrows, Targets, &c. A Bow may be insured for ten days after delivery, at one eighth of its price, that period being deemed sufficient to ascertain its good quality; in which time if the bow by fair shooting should break, upon its being returned another will be allowed..." The bill is dated from June 29th, 1813 - August 9th, 1814. Bill-head D,2*.3 states "Bought of Thomas Waring, Manufacturer of Bows, Arrows, Targets, & every other Article relative to Archery." The bill is dated August 9th, 1804. Banks,2*.8 is a bill-head with the same text as Banks,2*.3. The verso is inscribed in pen and black ink "Target Days/ 9 of May/9 of June/9 of July/9 of August/ The shooting begins at one O'Clock. The Meeting Days are every Thursday and begin to shoot at half past five and dine at four." Banks (D,2.94) and identical card, Banks,2*.6 advertise "Thomas Waring, Manufacturer of Bows, Arrows, Targets, & every other Article relative to Archery..." Bill-head Banks (D,2.57) states "Bought of Thomas Waring Manufacturer of Bows, Arrows, and every other Article relative to Archery. For Ready Money only." Bill-head Banks (D,2.76) states "Bought of Thomas Waring Manufacturer of Bows, Arrows, and every other Article relative to Archery." The bill is dated "London 1806."
