Lady Sophia Raffles (British; Female; 1858)

Also known as

Raffles, Sophia; Hull, Sophia

Second wife of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles (q.v.), whom she married in 1817. Following the death of Sophia, the Raffles Collection was offered to the British Museum as a possible purchase for 1,000 guineas by the executor of her estate. The offer was declined. Sir Stamford Raffles' nephew and heir, Rev William Charles Raffles Flint (q.v.) persisted and offered the Raffles' Collection to the Museum again, this time as a donation.
