Appointed a curator in the Department of Oriental Antiquities at the British Museum from 1977 to 1991, where he was promoted to Deputy Keeper in 1982; after leaving the Museum he was awarded the Nasser D. Khalili professorship in Islamic Art & Archaeology at the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London, retiring thereafter to work for the Nour Foundation for the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art.
