Painter of literary genre and history subjects, published prints after his paintings; bap. Colchester 1737; entered RA Schools 1770; exhibited SA 1772-74, including illustrations to 'The Sentimental Journey', one engraved by Valentine Green 1774; went to Rome with Copley 1774; exhibited RA 1775-1784; to Gibraltar and St. Petersburg between 1779 and 1783; held private exhibition 1785; in Calcutta 1786-1788, painting scenes of Indian history even after he returned to London; settled in Hendon; buried Hendon 1794; post-mortem sale 29-30 April 1795, Lugt, 5325.
