Painter of landscapes and animals, engraver, and illustrator; b. London 1756; son and pupil of Charles Catton I, sometimes signs as junior; entered RA Schools 1775; exhibited RA 1776-1800; emigrated to USA c. 1802, but appears not to have painted professionally there; also painted topographical watercolours; 1789 published acquatints of animals; d. New York, NY 1819. Trade card in Banks Collection (D,2.3196) advertises "Catton, No.7, on the Terrace, Tottenham Court Road." The card is inscribed in pen and black ink "designed by Catton. 1787."
