Painter, etcher, illustrator and designer on wood. Son of the amateur artist Charles Cope (q.v.). Named after his father's friend Benjamin West. His sister was named Ellen Turner Cope, after Joseph Mallord William Turner. Elected RA in 1848; worked in Leeds, Italy and London. Published etchings in 'Etching Club' from 1841. Member correspondent of the Société internationale des aquafortistes.
