Painter, miniaturist, draughtsman and collector: bapt. at Okeford 1742; d. London 1821; husband of Maria Cosway; in London 1754; studied with Hudson (?) and at Shipley's Drawing School, winning prizes from Society of Arts 1755-60; exhibited SA 1760-69, FS 1761-66; entered RA Schools 1769; exhibited RA 1770-1806; ARA 1770; RA 1771; in 1785 became Principal Painter to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales; collected old masters and decorative arts; post-mortem sale 1821 and 1822, Lugt 10041.
