London 1743; pupil of Ehrenstrahl in Sweden; in England 1682-5, possibly studying there in Kneller's studio; in Paris and Rome 1684; left Rome 1687 via Frankfurt to London, where he settled in 1689 until his death; employed by Prince George of Denmark; patronised by Queen Anne and court; 1690s under patronage of Duke of Somerset; lost court patronage 1714, continued portraying nobility, law and church figures; pupils included Hans Hysing.
