Australian-born British mining financier, who made his fortune in South Africa. Married Mary Zillah Halford (q.v.) in 1888; knighted in 1927. Art collector, advised by Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon. Bequeathed collections to the Musée du Luxembourg (later inherited by the Musée d'Orsay) and the National Gallery of South Africa in Cape Town. What remained of the Davis collection was sold by Lady Davis following Sir Edmund's death and, there being no heirs, by executors after her death in 1941.
