Book and printseller; 1860, Frederick Startridge Ellis set up in business as a bookseller in Covent Garden; 1871-72 in partnership with G M Green (1841-1872); 1872 took over the business and premises of T and W Boone at 29 New Bond Street; c.1874-84, in partnership with David White; 1885, F S Ellis retired (his stock of rare books and manuscripts sold at Sotheby's, November 1885) and his nephew G I Ellis (1859-1902) continued the business until his death in 1902; the business was subsequently taken over by J J Holdsworth and George Smith, former assistants.
Purchased much material on behalf of the British Museum; published work by Morris, Rossetti and others.
