Cardinal from 1591. Second son of Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma (q.v.) and Maria of Portugal, and great-nephew and heir of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese (q.v), he was instructed by the antiquary Fulvio Orsini. Patron of the arts, particularly of the Carracci family.
