The actor; part-owner and manager of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane from 1747 onwards; collector of books, paintings, prints. Left his collection of plays and Roubiliac's statue of Shakespeare to the British Museum; his print collection of British and foreign portraits was sold in 1825.
