Portrait painter and picture dealer; b. Edinburgh; d. 1754; trained in style of Medina, possibly his apprentice; in Italy by 1715, as dealer selling to Thomas Coke and Edward Harley; by 1720s had abandoned painter for dealing and became major dealer in paintings and drawings, travelling between London, Paris and Rome; frequent auctions of stoc; retired to Edinburgh in 1745.
