Great collector, especially of Old Master drawings, Trustee of the National Gallery, stockbroker. Began etching in 1862, exhibited in Paris from 1869. He published 13 privately printed volumes of reproductions of drawings in his collection (for which see the introduction to the 27/9 May 1935 auction catalogue; all are in the BM). His collection was dispersed from 1913 onwards: see sales at F.Muller, Amsterdam, 27/8 May 1913, and Sotheby's 7/9 June 1920. The last (posthumous) sales being at Sotheby's on 27/9 May 1935 (drawings), 3/5 June 1935 (prints) and 8 July 1935 (the rest). He gave numerous prints and drawings to the BM during his lifetime. Died in London.
