Pieter van der Heyden (Biographical details)

Pieter van der Heyden (printmaker; Flemish; Male; c.1530 - 1584 after (?))

Also known as

Heyden, Pieter van der; Martini, Pietro; Merecinus, Petrus; Merica, Petrus á; Mericenys, Peter

Flemish engraver; worked Antwerp. 1551-1571 worked for Hieronymus Cock. His prints are often monogrammed "P/AME"; one such, a satire on Elizabeth I and Pope Gregory XIII (BM Satires 12), contains a reference to the assassination in 1584 of William the Silent suggesting that van der Heyden was active for longer than is generally assumed. Sauer gives uncertain dates of c. 1530 - 1576.
