Portrait painter and collector of Old Master drawings; b. Devon 1701; d. Twickenham 1779; pupil of Richardson, whose daughter he married by 1725; active in West country and London from 1730-40; his draperies frequently painted by Joseph Van Aken (d. 1757), who also worked for Ramsay and Pickering; young Reynolds was his apprentice 1740-43; taught Wright of Derby, Mortimer, and others; to France and Netherlands 1748; brief visit to Italy with Roubiliac 1752; in London 1742 to mid 1750s; exh. SA 1761 and 1766.
