John Kay (Biographical details)

John Kay (printmaker; British; Male; 1742 - 1826)

Also known as

Kay, John

10 Parliament Close, Edinburgh (1800) Greenside Place, Edinburgh (1846)

Edinburgh etcher of portrait caricatures.
There are two albums of his work in the BM, both apparently assembled by Kay himself:
(1) 159.b.23/4 with 343 plates numbered in pencil (referred to in BMSat as 'Collection')
(2) 298* a.8 with 205 plates (referred to in BMSat as 'Kay's Caricatures')
BMSat also refers (as 'Kay no.[eg]CCXL') to a reprint of the plates under the title 'A Series of original portraits and caricature etchings', edited by Hugh.Paton, published in Edinburgh in 1838 . The text of this identifies the people in the prints. There is no copy of this in the BM; but it is in the BL, the pressmark 1267 f.11/12.
