Biography

Son of Robert Stewart, Marquess of Londonderry. Better known as Viscount Castlereagh. As Chief Secretary for Ireland (1798-1801) was instrumental in the passage of the Act of Union in 1800, but his attempt to achieve subsequent political emancipation of Roman Catholics was unsuccessful. President of the India Board 1802-6, Secretary of War 1805-6, 1807-9. As Foreign Secretary (1812-22) took a leading part in bringing together the alliance of great powers that finally overthrew Napoleon and in deciding the form of the peace settlement of Vienna. 1821, succeeded his father as 2nd Marquess of Londonderry; committed suicide in the following year.
